11.8.17 Parent Meeting & Book Club

GATE PARENT MEETING & BOOK CLUB |

Our first GATE Parent Site Representative Meeting and book club is quickly approaching. Our Book Club 2016 Selection is “Mindset: The New Psychology of Success” by Carol Dweck. Mindset is a simple idea discovered by world-renowned Stanford University psychologist Carol Dweck in decades of research on achievement and success. Please join us as we explore this text and discuss its application in the education of our community’s children.

We will meet at IUSD’s Learning Center, Room 1, from 9:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, November 8th. This meeting is intended for adult attendance only. Childcare will not be available. Please refer to location address and directions below.

Book Club Discussions will be held during the first hour of the meeting. The last 30 minutes will be reserved for general parent site representative discussion topics.

I look forward to engaging in this first GATE Book Club experience together.

CHAPTERS 1-2 DISCUSSION QUESTIONS
Evaluate your current mindset.

Take the quiz at this link. (1. What's my mindset? For age 12 to adult) https://www.mindsetworks.com/assess/
How has your childhood and the way in which you were raised influenced your mindset?

Think about this quote from the text, "If you could arrange successes and avoid failure (At all costs!) you could stay smart."

  1. When do you feel smart?
  2. How do we define smart?
  3. Do our children believe that one is smart if the work is easy?
  4. Do "smart" students get the correct answer and get it quickly?
  5. What happens to "smart" students when they have to put forth effort? Do they then question how smart they are?

Consider the concept of effort.

  1. Do you value effort?
  2. How would you feel if your child was given the "effort award" at the next school assembly?

Changing the mindsets of our children, families and schools begins with changing the mindsets in ourselves.

  1. How do we cultivate a growth mindset in ourselves?

MEETING 1 CHALLENGE: BE A GROWTH MINDSET ROLE MODEL.
How often do you say “I can’t (cook/sing/balance the budget)” or “I’m terrible at (sports/spelling/public speaking)” as if there’s no hope for you? Make sure you’re sending the right message – maybe even take on something new!
Finish any sentence about something that you are currently unable to do with the word “yet”!
