Paul Kanarek, featured CAC-GATE speaker

We are pleased to announce that Paul Kanarek, Managing Partner of College Wise, will return as our featured CAC-GATE speaker. He’ll address “What I Wish Someone had told me about University Admissions When I was a Middle School Parent.”
Mr. Kanarek, the Founder of The Princeton Review in California, will share more than 30 years of experience with the college admission process. When it comes to gaining admissions to colleges that fit the student’s needs, Paul Kanarek is able to guide parents in separating fact from stressful fiction. He brings genuine insight, mixed with humor, and has been well-received on many occasions with our IUSD families. This event is open to all IUSD families.

Dear Parent,
The Irvine Unified School District offers two programs to serve advanced learners in 4th through 6th grades, GATE and APAAS. GATE or Gifted and Talented Education services are provided at each elementary school through the cluster classroom model. APAAS, an Alternative Program for Academically Advanced Students, is offered at six IUSD elementary schools. All 3rd-6th grade students are automatically screened for the GATE program. Families must elect to apply for the APAAS program.
On February 13, 2020 we will be hosting our GATE and APAAS program information night. All families are invited to participate and learn more about these upper elementary advanced learner programs.
Families have three options for participation. Please note, all options will cover the same information. Options include:
1.    Attend an on-line session in the comfort of your home at a time convenient to you. This presentation will be sent via email and posted on our website on February 13, 2020.
2.    Attend an in person informational session on February 13, 2020 from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Northwood High School Theater, 4515 Portola Parkway, Irvine. This meeting is for adult attendance only and will not provide any additional information or experience over the on-line option. The Language Development Department will provide translation services for this option.
3.    Attend an in person informational session on February 13, 2020 from 7:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the Northwood High School Theater, 4515 Portola Parkway, Irvine. This meeting is for adult attendance only and will not provide any additional information or experience over the on-line option.
Each of the three options above will provide a detailed overview of the GATE identification process and program as well as the APAAS application process and program. APAAS applications will be sent out to the families of all third grade students on February 14, 2020. Families do not need to attend the information session to apply.
